Bachelors of Arts in Education

INTRODUCTION This program approaches teaching as scholarly work and it intends to supplement, advance and enhance the teaching abilities of participants. It is designed primarily to enhance the teaching effectiveness and to provide a systematic preparation for all aspects of academic careers. Completion of this program leads to the award of a Bachelor of Arts in Education majoring in Intelligent Learning Systems (ILS).

Program Duration

This is a three year program. The contact hours vary from module to module but all students are required to complete 200 contact hours on the entire program.

Program Requirements

  • To receive the teaching award students must complete coursework in four pedagogical, professional development and psychological content areas.
  • The completion of each content area entails the completion of suggested readings, assignments and course content application task(s).
  • Attendance of all modules.
  • Be observed by and receive reflective feedback by a faculty mentor. The observation needs to be conducted before the completion of all the modules.
  • Document his/her teaching effectiveness via portfolio (reviewed by faculty mentor).
  • Teaching Portfolio Development – the portfolio needs to be submitted after completion of all coursework.

Program Modules

Learning styles and teaching

This course will attempt to provide an overview of major issues related to teaching and learning with an emphasis on the various learning styles related to learning and teaching. It will enable teachers to develop a solid understanding of the purpose of teaching skills and the wide array of teaching materials utilized to optimize student. Imparting values of Confucian philosophy will further define and enhance the roles, responsibilities and behaviors of students in society.

Neuro-linguistic programming and teaching

This course will identify a pedagogy and curriculum format that will assist teachers to acquire knowledge and skills appropriate for students to assimilate learning behavioral styles. Psychological and longitudinal methods and studies will be utilized to improve and enhance students’ cognitive and effective requirements skills to improve performance and competence.

Emotional intelligence and teaching

This course will focus on how teachers develop personal intelligence in a classroom setting. It will also help teachers identify intrapersonal and interpersonal skills and the five personality dynamics to enhance classroom performance.

Testing methods for teachers

The course will include the various assessment methods appropriate to the aim of the Intelligent Learning System with an emphasis on the aims, teaching targets methods and quality indicators. It will include written tests, observation and performance/product tests, which will provide effective feedback to excellent teaching practices and improved instructional decision making.

Learning and memory

The aim of this course is to focus on various general approaches to learning strategies to assist learners in improving their knowledge in their target language. Emphasis will be given on learners meta-cognitive, cognitive, affective and social domains to improve learners’ performance.

Human development

This course will identify and define key concepts in major contemporary theories and principles of human development. It will also seek to enhance teachers’ professional knowledge base and especially the cognitive and effective requirements of the participants to enhance students’ learning, performance and motivation.

Educational leadership

The fundamentals of this course will focus on various contemporary leadership theories, assessment of personal leadership theory, importance of leadership cultures in schools and classroom leadership, which will incorporate core Confucian values and importance of team leadership. The underlying basis will be to promote dynamic leadership qualities among students.

Developmental psychology

This is an introductory course that will incorporate human growth and development. The emphasis will be on development issues of learners, the cognitive and moral development, social and personality development and socio-cultural development.

Education and society

The basis of this course is to focus on the philosophy of education and touch on social foundations of various educational policies as well as explore cultural institutions and processes that pre-dominate school policies and teacher practices in the social context.

Adolescent behavior

The emphasis of this course will be on developmental issues on adolescent development tasks and needs in relation to the physical, cognitive, moral and social-emotional conflicts as well as the factors influencing their development.

Teaching students with learning difficulties

This course will provide a comprehensive guide to teachers on various strategies to cope with students with learning disabilities and special needs. Emphasis will be on theoretical behavioral issues and practical applications. Cognitive, affective and psychological domains will also be covered.

Introduction to teaching

This course will focus on various theories associated with language learning and examine interaction among learners, the classroom environment and the teaching/learning process motivations. It will also focus on current issues affecting education.

Process of leaning

This course will examine the various accepted theories and current prevailing research in language learning. It also explores the various learning styles and strategies on how learners process, store and retrieve information and how they can demonstrate their learning and intelligence in various ways.

Creating effective learning

This course will focus on generating various learning strategies to help students’ master content and develop skills. It will also examine how emotions and culture affect learning and influence cognitive processing.

Critical theory and practice on teaching and learning

This course will focus on various critical language learning approaches and methodologies and how teachers can critically assess their own teaching and learning style and develop a plan to apply concepts and principles in language learning.

Cultural diversity in learning

This course will enable teachers to deal with diverse learners who may differ in culture, gender and language and those with learning disabilities.

Ethics and values in education

This course will focus on the values and ethics in the context of education. It will stress the importance of character education and the role of the teacher in implementing ethics and values in order to develop sensitivity to ethical issues and dilemmas in a classroom.

Gender and education

This course will stress on the role played by schools in the society in regards to the organizational aspects and the role of education and its relation to other social institutions and social relationships of the classroom.

Mentoring

The purpose of this course is to facilitate a supportive, collaborative learning experience for students. Ongoing mentoring meetings will be carried out among teachers and program coordinators to refine mentoring skills. Participation in training workshops will also be conducted.

Environmental Awareness

This course will introduce students to basic environmental issues and problems. The course will give the necessary skills to ask questions relating to environmental problems and survey a variety of topics including pollution, recycling and human population dynamics. It will also educate students to have a love for Mother Nature.

Confucianism Thinking and Education

This course will explore major concepts in Confucianism, the four key principles of Confucian teaching: the family system, “Jen” (benevolence) and the emphasis on education. It will explore human sensitivity and the focus on commonality in terms of human sensitivity.
